Rimowa: when luggage becomes a legend
Rimowa is best known for its grooved aluminium suitcases – an iconic design inspired by the first all-metal aircraft. The reason is as practical as it is stylish: the regular grooved surface conceals scratches and enhances stability. These refined travel companions also impress with their inner features: most models offer a smart interior layout and flexible solutions thanks to the adjustable Flex Divider system. Before buying a Rimowa suitcase, it's worth considering the right size. Most Rimowa models come in various formats – from compact cabin luggage for weekend getaways to spacious 130-litre suitcases for extended trips. All models are equipped with certified TSA locks. Standard features include sturdy, smooth-rolling wheels (Multiwheel system) and a continuously adjustable telescopic handle. Tip: buy your Rimowa suitcase in the sale and save more for your holiday!
The foundation for Rimowa’s success was laid in 1898. The Cologne-based company initially produced leather harnesses before moving on to wooden suitcases covered in leather. The saddle maker soon became a small suitcase factory, officially named Koffer- und Lederwaren-Fabrik Paul Morszeck GmbH in 1908. Two decades later, the founder’s son took over the company and, in 1931, renamed it RIMOWA – an acronym for RIchard MOrszeck WArenzeichen. A pivotal change came in 1937 when the company switched from leather and wood to aluminium. The legendary grooved pattern was introduced in 1950 – now the signature look of the Cologne-based brand. Rimowa’s logo includes the letters M and O (for Morszeck) and echoes the silhouette of Cologne Cathedral, symbolising the brand’s deep connection to its hometown.
Rimowa aluminium suitcases & polycarbonate cases
Aluminium suitcases are part of Rimowa’s DNA. When you buy a Rimowa suitcase, you can count on long-lasting quality. The aluminium models are virtually indestructible, offering not only the signature grooved design but also exceptional impact resistance. Whether it’s airport handling, stairs or rough terrain – Rimowa aluminium cases can handle it all. The Original and Classic collections feature robust aluminium designs. The Classic line stands out with its angular silhouette and leather handles, emphasising a vintage look. Both series use premium anodised aluminium, known for its corrosion resistance and strength. Another hallmark of Rimowa aluminium suitcases are the riveted corners, which add durability and serve as a striking design detail.
Since 2000, Rimowa has also offered suitcases made from polycarbonate. These can be found in the Essential, Essential Lite and Essential Sleeve collections. Key features include lightweight construction and temperature sensitivity. Rimowa’s polycarbonate cases are shatterproof, highly resilient and UV-resistant. The Essential Lite models are especially light – a suitcase with over 80 litres of volume weighs just 3.5 kg. A highlight of the Essential Sleeve range is a separate front pocket for laptops and documents – perfect for business travellers. Some Rimowa models are made from a hybrid of polycarbonate and aluminium. These suitcases combine the best of both materials, offering impressive stability with minimal weight.
Rimowa bags and backpacks
In addition to aluminium and polycarbonate luggage, Rimowa also offers a range of bags and backpacks. These often feature the brand’s signature grooves, typically as textured patterns on external pockets or across the front or sides. Every Rimowa backpack and bag is designed with travel in mind. Whether it’s a shopper, backpack or crossbody, most models include a rear trolley strap for easy attachment to a suitcase handle. A detachable address tag is another typical feature of Rimowa backpacks and shoppers. These bags are crafted from durable, hard-wearing materials such as leather or canvas.
